Teaching us to be Human Again
for eight snare drums and electronics
performed by percussionists and friends at the University of Texas at Austin. Premiered April 22nd, 2017 at Imagine Art, part of Tetractys.
Teaching us to be Human Again is a piece about our relationship with technology, how it shapes what we do and how we build relationships. The piece takes the form of sort of an oral history, the snare drummers representing humanity and the electronics part (small speakers attached to the bottom of each of the drums) representing technology. Things begin simply, the organized chaos of early life attempting to be brought into focus by technology. As the piece goes on things become more and more complex and convoluted, until a reverse big bang takes place, and ties between technology and humanity dissolve. Does technology make us more or less human? or does it force us to look at what made us human in the first place?
